Psychotherapy

Individual sessions provide a private space for us to reflect on your thoughts, feelings and life situation.  The therapy space offers you an environment in which you can express your feelings and gain a deeper insight into the issues you face. There is the possibility of short and longer term work. The sessions are designed to meet your needs and can adapt and develop with you. We will aim to help you find better ways to cope, or bring about changes in the way you think and behave to improve your mental and emotional wellbeing.

I have a special interest in trauma work, anxiety and depression, often linked to addiction. I work with you to help find what will lead to the shifts and changes you need and want.

Psychotherapy sessions are confidential. This means that you can talk about things you might not feel be able to discuss with anyone else.

It is not so important to choose between counselling, psychotherapy or Dance Movement Psychotherapy as there is crossover.  Central to my way of working is empathic listening, a non-judgemental attitude, compassion, belief in paying attention to the embodied experience and that opening to creativity helps us to access that which has been lost in our personalities and lives.  I see myself as walking with you as you in this process.

Initial Assessment

When you contact me, we arrange an assessment session where we can both decide if it seems as if sessions with me could be useful for you.  If we go ahead, there follows 3/4 sessions to give some time to establish the aims of the work together.

The initial session allows you to see if I am the right person for you and to give you the opportunity to ask any questions you may have about me and the process of therapy. At the same time, this gives me the opportunity to find out more about you and what problem you are struggling with.

There is absolutely no obligation to continue after the initial session.

What happens in a session?

Sessions last for one hour at a time.

We address whatever you bring to the session, verbally and non-verbally.

The amount and type of movement and talking we do, depends on what suits you and seems best at the time.  If there is movement in a session it can range from being aware of your breathing or the flexing of a hand to an improvised burst of energy to being led through some movements. There is not an expectation of performance or doing the movements correctly.  The aim to allow your body to ‘speak’, connecting to your feelings and emotions and increasing your body awareness.

Confidentiality is an important aspect in allowing there to be openness in the sessions.  I am bound by both ADMP and UKCP’s codes of ethics and my Licence to Practice is renewed yearly.
